How do I get started with Skype?
I have found Skype a little easier to setup, and so if you are new to video sessions, Skype may be the better option for you.
If you haven’t already got Skype installed on your computer, tablet or mobile phone, it’s easy to get started. All you need to do is follow this link for full instructions and Skype download:
You will need to make sure your computer/tablet/phone has a webcam either already installed or opt for an external one you can plug in. Similarly, for best quality of sound and increased privacy, having either a headset or USB handset will increase the quality of the Skype session (you can buy these online from web sites such as Amazon).
The Skype website and the Skype software will between them give you all the information you need to know about setting up and using Skype.
Once you’ve got Skype installed, have chosen a Skype username, tested that your webcam and headphones are working OK and are generally familiar with the controls, you can proceed to the next stage.
Open up skype and add me to your Contact List by clicking the add contacts icon. My username is “onlinecounsellinghelp” (without the quote marks). Then you will be able to meet up with me online at the arranged mutually convenient date and time for our first online session. I will call you using the Skype app, and to answer my call please click on the video camera icon presented on your screen.
How do I get started with Zoom
Zoom is one of the top video conferencing applications currently on the market. You will need to make sure your computer/tablet/phone has a webcam either already installed or opt for an external one you can plug in. Similarly, for best quality of sound and increased privacy, having either a headset or USB handset will increase the quality of the Zoom session (you can buy these online from web sites such as Amazon).
When you contact me, we will arrange a time and day to meet for our Zoom session. I will have asked you to send me your email address which I will use to send you an email invitation to join the session.
At the time of the session (not before, or the invitation will not activate), click on the link in the email (join via PC, Mac, iOS or Android) and you will be taken to the meeting.
You do not have to have a Zoom account to attend a Zoom session. If this is your first Zoom meeting, you will be prompted to download the software, once you have clicked on the link that you have received by email. You may also wish to create an account, but that is not required to participate in a Zoom meeting.
Here is a link to a YouTube video that illustrates the above: Joining a Zoom session.
Beginning a Skype or Zoom Session
After we say hello, and ensured that we can both see and hear each other well. I’ll ask you what you would like to bring to the session. You’ll set the topic and tell me as much about it as you like.
As and when it feels appropriate, I will ask you questions, offer some input and together we’ll explore the issue in more depth. In this sense, it’s not unlike a person to person session.
Please make sure you have a private and comfortable place to call from, where you can express yourself freely and without fear of being overheard or interrupted.
